Ok well first off, Hi my name is Eric...ok yeah...now...I sing and write songs and play guitar for a Rock band...Pure Silhouette(www.myspace.com/puresilhouett... and origionaly we were "Christian Rock," we would play alot of cover songs and also Vineyard worship music....but now about a half a year later (we have been togther about a year)...I fell that our band should be you know "Christian by faith, but not by genre"...I really like to write songs about "world flaws" "what makes life worth living for.." and so on, my writting have been compared to alot of contemerary rock...i guess the way Switchfoot writes...they are really a big influence in my life...i do my best not to copy them...they are only an influence...anyways...our drummer is the son of a pastor...so rifly he is very religous...and im not sure how my new approch on song writting and style will fly with him and the rest of the band(he writes some songs too)(some of the songs on our myspace are his lyrics and my music)cont-%26gt;

Why would it be sinful to use your talents and gifts to the best of your ability? It isnt sinful at all What would be sinful is if you wasted your abilities. As Christians we're all called to use our various gifts in whatever we do in life, and that can be just as faithful as doing things specifically "Christian," if not more so. Jesus certainly didn't limit his ministry to the "righteous." Best of luck to you! (Want to come play at my church???)

Write what you want to write. If it doesn't work out with the band you are in, form another one. You can be Christian and not sing Christian rock.

I write words for both, but mostly pop type, bordering on rock.

I have some recordings but the man who has been providing the melodies doesn't seem to be interested in expanding into other things (such as music videos).

There's definitely a place for everything. There's a place for Christians to write songs not meant for other Christians, things that will appeal to non-christians. But, you can write some of both. Write praise songs, and other songs about life, whatever. As long as God is your influence, you can't go wrong. I think, at least. God bless and good luck with your talents!

Eric, you are an artist and as such you have the right to use your talents as God gave them to you. If you are afraid of the Christian label might I warn you that Stryper did the same thing and fell flat on their face. I believe this happened because the fans looked at them as being ashamed of the cause.
But, if you want to write songs that are Christian based or themed that is fine. There can be a balance in your group that should not offend the members. I think most of U2 are Christian(not sure) but they right really good songs that are not offensive for the most part. I am not sure if I am getting my point across.
My point is simply add to your repertoire and if you feel the need drop the Vineyard unless fans request you sing one. Do not drop your more obvious Christian themes.
Oh yeah do not forget that many Christian Bands can get quite famous and almost rival the secular world. So pray and find out what your real motives are and you will be fine.

A Christian song doesn't have to necessarily mention God, if that's what you're asking- any more than a book has to mention God to be part of the bible.

i see that you wrote what Tim Foreman said, "Christians by faith and not by genre." lol! but in a lot of their music they raise real life questions and situations. I thinkk that you can make music that your going through right now. Jon Foreman says that he writes about sex, girls, politicians the kinds of things that he gets confronted with. So maybe you can write about the life issues that you are going through and you wouldn't be copying their music since probably you are going through different situations. What mostly do you worry about? What do you need help with? What do you wish was different? ask yourself those kinds of questions. Just like someone that commented write music that would appealing to both Christians and non-Christians. Have your music have a Christian touch to it but not that Christian so that non believers can like it too. So once they start listening to it they will begin to think about the song, and they would get a sense of Christianity.
