What do you think of the ideas of this group, "Atheists for Jesus?"?

Basically, they are atheists, and so do not believe in got or the Christian doctorine of a god-man. However, they do believe in a historical Jesus, and argue that he was a wise man, a true revelutionary, and serious positive influence on the developemnt of culture. They also add that he had to be a theist because everyone was in his time, with no other option, but might nor have been a theist if born into hour world. Thats it in a nutshell for those who don't want to read the much longer presentation on the groups page.

So what do you think of these idea? -- A Jesus fan club by and for atheists.

it sounds like a cry for attention. another feeble attempt for these particular atheists to bridge the gap, if you will, between science and religion. Jesus' ideas weren't that original and the things christanity says about how to be moral and decent and all that jazz either aren't that original either or have been said in a far superior way before or since. plus, if you read the bible, jesus wasn't always that nice and friendly like christians want you to think he was... don't believe me? check out this quote straight from the bible...

I've never denied that Jesus was a good person, fictional or not. All he seems to have taught was that people should be kind to eachother and I don't think any atheist should disagree with that. He's one of the few consistent good rolemodels out there.

Interesting. Jesus as a humanitarian and philosopher who had to resort to using theism as a tool for spreading his message. Personally, I don't think I'll join.

I'd say that they have that right. What's it to you? You don't own Jesus. If they do not believe he is a god and are interested in his teachings, it doesn't make them any less of an atheist. It's not a group that I would be interested in because it's a little too close to religion since the most of what is known about Jesus is written in a book that I believe is a work of manmade fiction and propaganda geared toward making a martyr out of Jesus and concocting a new religion.

As a Christian I think this is a great idea, as I believe that Jesus' ideas are wonderful and should be used outside of religious activities, that being said I would hope that your group will be respectful towards him and his name.

I can understand that and agree with it, but there is no physical proof Jesus existed. There were in fact many "messiahs" with loads of followers, around the time and birthplace of Jesus, that just didn't take off like Christianity did. I don't know if he was a visionary or just a product of his time. I am a fan of Jesus, but not organized religion or Christianity. Most American Christians would call Jesus a liberal hippie today.

Im not willing to accept Jesus as an Icon for Atheism so no. Jesus walked on water and turned water into wine and that does not sound atheistic and logically possible to me. Also, Christians say Jesus is the son of God, so no... atheism for Jesus doesn't make sense.

okay, why not? after all-Christ's message and teachings were meant for EVERYONE-i have serious doubts about whether He was a 'theist' because 'everyone was in His time'...unless, of course, He was a liar or a deluded sheep...in which case, He would not have been much of a wise man, would He? logically speaking, of course...what He said He was, is not in doubt-He had a way of getting to the point, and He was not known for saying things that He didn't mean-so, "atheists for jesus?" why not?

What I think they are selling is...that they do not believe in the Resurrection. That would be believing in the "Holy Spirit". And I do believe in the Holy Spirit. I can give testimony as to how God the "Holy Ghost" has protected me...and guided me...therefore LOVES me.

If one believes there is evil in the devil...then one can believe that God is alive...because the devil even believes in God!
